Lamayuru is a quaint little village in Ladakh that has a very unique geographical formation. The village is also known as a “moonscape” for travellers and is home to one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. Dating back to the 11th century, the monastery was known to be the house of a scholar who prayed for the village lake to dry up, which resulted in the formation of moon-like crates, thus giving it the unique geography. Visit this village for a walk to meet the locals or visit the monastery that still stands strong after hundreds of years to marvel at the rich history of Ladakh.
